Rachelle Zhang, BIPH
I remember that night as clear as day
The stars were hidden but the moon shone bright

We settled near the railroad to camp for the night
We needed a way to escape the lonely plight
After what seemed for hours
I heard a sound near the water
It was a boat!
We could finally escape
We glanced at each other
Just like the good old days
Back in school when we were cohorts
We vowed and swore to each other in secrecy
We took an oath to protect one another
But I guess you forgot all that
All of the memories we made - the laughs we shared - the fights we had - and the tears we shed
Or did you not care about any of that?
Because the second I looked back
You left, ran away, and took the torch - the flame- the only light I had left
So I cried and cried that night
Let my hair down and fell onto my knees
Pinched myself, leaving scars all over hoping it wasn’t a dream
and that I would wake up and see you next to me
But I didn’t
And so when the sun rose I looked at the birds flying past

And wished you had taken the memories of the life we made
The life you left that fateful night
